Acer laptop Extensa 7630EZ

= my first Linux computer

It is an Acer Extensa 7630EZ. Powerful thing. 2.1 GHz clock rate. Big screen. I have bought it over www.notebooksbilliger.de. It was very cheap, less than 450.00 EUR in autumn 2009.

There was the choice between Linux and WindowsXP. I have chosen Linux because it was cheaper and because I finally wanted to see how it works. My inventors often use that OS. My last Unix computer was a workstation at Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal, in 1990. I believe that it was a Sun, but I am not sure. It could have been something different. Unix was not bad at that time because it was fast and it had a GUI. The DOS computers still had a command line UI. One needed the command line UI of Unix seldom.

Today, I got my wife's laptop up and running. The Unix version is a Linux dialect, developed by a Taiwan company and sold under Linpus.

Very interesting thing. Plenty of things to discover.

Neat thing: the OS supports NTPs, so synchronizing with a time server is no issue.

The laptop comes with a lot of software. An office package which generates Microsoft compatible documents (provided by ? in Java). A mail client.

I wanted to try out the DVD player but it did not work properly, hopefully  because of the bad movie.

Things that still need to be solved:

- how to uninstall programs? I have not yet found any system tray for that.

- how to install Skype? There are so many beta options on the skype.com page

- how to update the OS? My automatic update gives me error messages when I try to use it.

- how to do an image of the hard disk? Are there programs available on the Internet?

- how to use it with the iPod and with my wife's Sony MP3 player?

- how can I make sure that the WLAN logon is done automatically? Right niw, I still need to enter the WLAN key each time I am booting the system.

kill Linpus - install WinXP home

sorry, but I had no other choice

ok, after nine (9) months with my nice Acer Laptop, my wife decided that she does not want the Linpus and the software which comes together with it. She wants her Windows back. I have therefore flattened the hard disk and installed my old WindowsXP home that was on the old computer.

There have been some problems with the WLAN card because it was not found. After a long forum discussion

I have found the right driver package and installed. The laptop works now under WindowsXP and everything is ok. A hard piece of work for me, lots of trial-and-error.

I have a photo here together with my passport so that you may see how big it is. It is really very comfortable and it will hopefully live for a long time. It is at least too big for being taken to the public swimming pool, this gives some hope.

I will now try out to run my son's PS3 with Linux. Best would be a remote access over the WLAN. The PS3 seems to be a nice piece of engineering. Please look here on the homepage for a future article.
